On display in the gallery this month is a solo exhibition by Fine Arts Faculty Ariya Martin (Aladjem Wolf).
The exhibition, Beyond Family, is an installation of photographs and an artist book that are part of a long-term ongoing project. Created primarily with an 8x10, large format camera, the portraits and landscapes that comprise much of the work delve into the artist's upbringing in a Zen Buddhist community during the 1970s and 80s and the community's continued significance in the artist's life. The Gestalt reflects on notions of faith and spirituality, family and community, impermanence and time.
Ariya Martin(she/her), working under the moniker Ariya Aladjem Wolf is a visual artist, performer, and educator based in Bulbancha/New Orleans, Louisiana. Aladjem Wolf’s creative work is collaborative in spirit. She is a founding member of Southerly Gold, an all-female photography collective; performs in the vocal ensemble, Serpentine, who use sound and the creation of activated space to facilitate places for transformation and healing; and additionally, co-founded the organization, One Bird, dedicated to community youth arts. She directs the photography program at the University of New Orleans.
She received her MFA in Imaging Arts-Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology and has been an active member of the New Orleans art community since 2006. Her work has been exhibited at various institutions, including The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and Acadiana Center for the Arts. She is a member of the St. Claude artist-run Good Children Gallery.
The exhibition will be on display from May 11th through June 2nd.
With an opening reception on Saturday, May 11th, from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00 - 5:00 pm.
